Os congressistas norte-americanos levantaram-se várias vezes, durante o discurso, para aplaudir o Sumo Pontífice.
Foi um discurso muito aplaudido, este do Papa Francisco no Congresso norte-americano.
À chegada, Francisco foi recebido por dezenas de milhares de pessoas que se juntaram junto ao Capitólio.
Foi o primeiro discurso alguma vez feito por um Papa na câmara legislativa do país, que tem 22% de católicos.
A necessidade de acolher imigrantes, lutar contra a pobreza e desigualdades e proteger o meio ambiente foi o tema central do discurso. O Papa atacou também a pena de morte e lembrou quatro nomes norte-americanos que lutaram pela justiça: Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King., a ativista social católica Dorothy Day e o padre, escritor e ativista Thomas Merton.
