Several hundred people took part in a Muslim “peace march” against extremism in the western German city of Cologne on Saturday.
The organisers, however, have expected a far higher number of protesters.

#The low turnout of participants comes after Germany’s biggest Islamic association has said earlier this week that it won’t take part in the march.
The Turkish-Islamic Union said the demonstration in Cologne would send a wrong signal by suggesting international extremism is mainly a Muslim problem.
The union, known by its acronym DITIB, also said Muslims observing the Ramadan fast couldn’t be expected to march for hours in the summer sun.
A group calling itself “Not With Us” nevertheless participated in the march.

Hundreds of protesters, many of them Muslims, marched through Cologne on Saturday (June 17) in an anti-extremism demonstration under the motto “not with us”.Protesters said they wanted to send a signal that they did not support extremism, following Islamist attacks in European countries including Britain, France and Belgium. In December, a failed asylum-seeker and supporter of Islamic State from Tunisia rammed a truck through a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people.

The largest association of mosques in Germany, Ditib, refused to support the march, saying it stigmatised Muslims and sowed division.
However one of the event’s organisers, Lamya Kaddor, defended the protest, saying that Ditib was being divisive in criticising it.
